We’re often told to only start things we can “win” at. If it’s not going to make money, get a promotion, or look perfect on a resume, we’re tempted to skip it.
But here’s a secret: The “useless” projects are often the ones that change us the most.
Think about the time you tried to learn a new instrument, build a piece of furniture, or start a hobby blog that nobody read. On paper, maybe those things “failed.” But look closer at what you actually walked away with:
Patience: You learned how to be “bad” at something until you weren’t.
Problem-Solving: You figured out a workaround when things didn’t go as planned.
Perspective: You gained a deeper appreciation for people who make that skill look easy.
Whether it’s a failed side business or a marathon you didn’t finish, nothing is a waste of time if it upgrades your brain. The goal isn’t always the trophy; sometimes, the goal is just becoming a more interesting person.
What’s something you tried that didn’t “work out” but taught you a lesson you still use today? I’d love to hear your story in the comments!
