What is something that is still worth trying because of what you will learn along the way?

We’re often told to only start things we can “win” at. If it’s not going to make money, get a promotion, or look perfect on a resume, we’re tempted to skip it.

But here’s a secret: The “useless” projects are often the ones that change us the most.

Think about the time you tried to learn a new instrument, build a piece of furniture, or start a hobby blog that nobody read. On paper, maybe those things “failed.” But look closer at what you actually walked away with:

  • Patience: You learned how to be “bad” at something until you weren’t.

  • Problem-Solving: You figured out a workaround when things didn’t go as planned.

  • Perspective: You gained a deeper appreciation for people who make that skill look easy.

Whether it’s a failed side business or a marathon you didn’t finish, nothing is a waste of time if it upgrades your brain. The goal isn’t always the trophy; sometimes, the goal is just becoming a more interesting person.

What’s something you tried that didn’t “work out” but taught you a lesson you still use today? I’d love to hear your story in the comments!
