One Idea:
I had a high pressure leadership role. My team & I took big risks, educated, but big. Sometimes things got a little, ok maybe a lot, sideways. During those moments, when sh*t was going wrong, and when my team was flipping out, I would reframe situation in an often humorous context. Not in a way to dismiss the severity, but to provide some relief of the intensity of the situation. I wasn’t a slacker, my team knew my objective was to relieve stress & create some space for them to tackle the issues.
My boss didn’t like it. CEO didn’t like it. Interpreted as me not owning & driving solution. Optics are a big deal. Some leaders believe people perform better when boss is breathing down our neck, telling us how bad it is, and we better fix it now. Â
This was a work situation, but problems surface all over in life. Â
One Question:
What type of leader, parent, friend are you?
One Exercise:
This week, reflect on some recent “problems” and your approach of dealing with it. Helps to write it down, problem, who involved, how you handled, outcome. Is your approach working well for you & those around you?
