What Are You Doing Today That Will Benefit You in a Decade?

By Dave Smith, The Ultimate Retirement Coach

One Idea

Retirement isn’t built in a single leap—it’s the result of small, intentional steps taken consistently over time. The question, “What are you doing today that will benefit you in a decade?” is powerful because it shifts our focus from short-term convenience to long-term reward. The habits, savings, and choices you make right now determine the freedom, health, and happiness you’ll enjoy in retirement. Just as compounding interest grows your money, compounding actions grow your future well-being. Ten years from now, you’ll either be grateful you started—or wish you had.

One Question

If you kept living exactly as you are today—financially, physically, and emotionally—where would you be ten years from now? Would you be thriving in retirement, or scrambling to catch up?

One Exercise This Week

Choose two small but high-impact actions you can start today that your future self will thank you for. Write them down and commit to them for the next seven days. Examples:

  • Increasing your retirement contribution by 1–2%

  • Adding one extra walk each day for better health

  • Setting aside 30 minutes for family or journaling for emotional well-being

At the end of the week, reflect: Did these actions feel sustainable? How did they shift your sense of future security?

👉 Pro Tip: Small actions done consistently create the biggest transformations. Don’t underestimate the power of starting now.
